University Sains Malaysia

Partner - Lot 12

The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was founded in 1962 upon a resolution by the Penang State Legislative Council, establishing a collage in the state. An area in Sungai Ara was identified and later the foundation stone was placed by the then Prime Minister, Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj on the 7th of August 1967.

In 1969, the University of Penang started in response to the need for a larger campus with a more conducive environment, appropriate to the needs of the future of the country. Since its beginning, USM has implemented a school system, as opposed to the traditional faculty system. What is unique about this system is that each school could fulfil the needs of a more focused degree in the chosen area of study and at the same time, students could have the opportunity to explore other areas of study offered by another school.
The interdisciplinary approach ensures that USM, the first in the country to adopt this system, would produce trained, multi-skilled graduates.

USM is currently representing Asia and Chair the Executive Committee of Commonwealth Universities Study Abroad Consortium (CUSAC), The Secretariat for Malaysia for University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) and chair its Committee for Marketing and Promotion.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Dzulkifli Abdul Razak is the President for Association of Southeast Asia Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) and the International Office acts as the Secretariat for Malaysia for the Association.

The Vice-Chancellor is also a Deputy Board Member of International Association of Universities (IAU). The University is an active member of Asean University Network, Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle University Network (IMT-GT UNINET), Global University Network and Innovation (GUNI) and also in the advisory committee for Asia-Europe Education Hub. The University is also one of the Regional Centre of Expertise for Education for Sustainable Development.
