University of Kuopio

Partner - Europe

The University of Kuopio (Finland) has International reputation in the fields of health, environment and well-being, with particular strengths in biotechnology, biosciences and molecular medicine. On the national level, the University contributes to the improvement of well-being and quality of life through its operations of an internationally high quality and promotes the vitality of Eastern Finland in particular as well as the development of the Kuopio region and the entire region of Northern Savo as a growth centre.

The university offers higher education leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in the areas of health, natural and environmental sciences, social sciences as well as business administration and information technology. Further education and open university education are also provided. The University hosts several world class research units, for example in the fields of Diabetes, Atherosclerosis and Climate Change Research.

As the first university in Finland the University of Kuopio received in 2006 a Quality Certificate which complies with the requirements of the standard SFS-EN ISO 9001:2000. The Certification covers “The teaching process along with the services supporting this process”.

The international co-operation networks of the University are worldwide and multi-disciplinary (http://www.uku.fi/english/cooperation.shtml). The University has participated in the Student and Teacher Mobility Programs funded by the European Commission since the beginning of 90’s and has about 150 European Universities as partners in education. The University collaborates actively world wide: with several North East Russian Universities, with tens of Universities in North and South America, with over ten African Universities and with some ten Asian Universities and Australian Universities as well.

According to University’s Strategy for 2007-2015 the University of Kuopio is a scientific university which has, through its national and international networking, become well-known for its health, welfare and environmental strategic research. It will host top quality research in its areas of emphasis, and the education based on this research will also be of the highest quality. The University’s teaching will be innovative, utilize the latest teaching methods and fulfill the principles of lifelong learning. The University will have a significant role in training researchers and facilitating professional research careers. - Expansion of the University’s international activities is one of the main means to be taken.
